Automated gates are often seen as a luxury however they can also be seen as a security blanket worth having when young children and animals are around for peace of mind. They encompass style, safety, and security.
Electric gates close automatically, ensuring that your investment serves its purpose as opposed to a manual gate which can often be easily left open.
Automatic gates will add value to your home in addition to elevating the aesthetics to your entrance.
We have several different operating systems available, depending on your individual requirements. Our team of experts will be able to guide you through the options available over the phone or email to help you choose the automation that really is right for you.
Alternatively, we can arrange a FREE, no-obligation, sales survey, where a member of our sales team can visit your premises to aid your quest for the perfect automation.
For automation, we require a 13-amp supply, 230V single phase taken from either a spur or a 16-amp radial. The size of cable is usually dictated by an electrician, although a 2.5mm armoured cable is usual subject to the length of driveway.
MOTOR TYPES
UNDERGROUND MOTORS
Functional meeting discreet. These mechanisms are designed to operate your gate automatically but allow the gates to have appearance of a manual set. These motors sit in silver casements under the ground at the bottom of the gate.
Not only can they be fitted to new gateways, but also to most pairs of existing gates and can automate both metal and wooden gates. In the eventuality of a power cut, the underground system has a key operated, manual release mechanism, which is conveniently situated on both the inside and outside of the gateway. This allows your gates to continue to provide security to your home even in a power outage.

ABOVEGROUND MOTORS
An economical approach. These types of motors are fitted to the back of the gate leaves, whilst less discreet compared to underground motors, they are just as good when it comes to quality and functionality. Manual release is achievable in two simple steps which is shown on commissioning.

SLIDING GATE MOTORS
Space saving solution. These motors sit on the floor on the inside of the gate line and allow the gate to effortlessly slide open and closed. Sliding gates come in both tracked and cantilever styles. A tracked sliding gate runs on wheels along a grooved steel rail that is buried just below ground level. A cantilever gate is counterbalanced above the ground, supported by rollers fitted to the bottom of the gate. The advantage of a cantilever gate is that you don’t have to keep the track free of leaves or debris. This upgrade on equipment requires more civil engineering.
There are several automation suppliers on the market, such as FAAC, BFT, Beninca, CAME, NICE, to name a few.

CAME
CAME are our preferred automation supplier. They are not only number 1 in the UK and Europe, but also the world when it comes to gate automation. They invest a lot in their products and where their competitors claim, “it can’t be done” CAME prove it can be.
CAME motors are versatile in the way in which they can be operated, including remote controls, digital keypads and intercoms. At Surrey Wrought Iron, we are fully qualified and accredited by CAME for installations and maintenance of the following electric gate operators.
Widely considered to be the finest underground gate mechanism available, the FROG automation system is highly efficient and delivers a smooth and safe motion - even in harsh conditions.
It is designed to automate metal and wooden gates with the pivot arm becoming the bottom hinge for the gate. Once installed, there is almost no sign of the mechanism, meaning it won’t detract from the overall appearance of your gateway.
The AXO range has a motor suitable for any application. From 230v, residential properties with smaller gates benefiting from the 3-metre version, to opening exceedingly heavy or larger gates with the 7-metre version.
Combined with the functionality of the ZM3E or ZLJ24 control panels, AXO motors the AXO range offers a vast array of functions and can meet the EN Standards straight out of the box. This ensures unparalleled safety, security and both quicker and cost effective installation.
Built-in encoder technology enables constant monitoring and controlling of the gates’ movement, ensuring complete safety.
Worm driven operators – above ground
Motor Worm driven gate operators are ideal for large and heavy swing gates, they’re powerful and reliable machines that will offer years of exceptional service. Attached to the gate posts, they use a screw type movement to pivot around that attachment point, shortening the dimensions and opening the gate.
Worm drive motors are ideal if you decide to retrofit automation. They are strong, reliable and durable, and only require periodic maintenance. These motors are better suited to wooden gates as the motor arm is visible when used on metal gate.
Tested in compliance with European Legislation, BX-243 is a complete automation system for sliding gates. An ideal solution for residential installations, this innovative operator has been brought up to EU and international standards for impact forces and meets even the most stringent safety requirements.
The BX is used for automating medium sized sliding gates. Thanks to high levels of efficiency and safety, it’s suitable for numerous applications, both in residential and apartment block settings. The series offers four 230V A.C. versions and one 24V D.C. model to be used under intense workloads and is ideal in situations where there are frequent power cuts.
The built-in control boards are latest-generation and fitted with all the indispensable commands for a complete system. They can be integrated at any time with any of CAME’s safety and command accessories.
BY3500T is used to power exceptionally heavy sliding gates weighing up to 3500Kg. A state-of-the-art control board provides maximum resistance to wear and total safety.
The 3-phase voltage power supply to the unit ensures intensive service even under heavy duty working conditions such as armoured gates or hangar doors.
The BK is the ultimate when it comes to service and safety. It’s designed for automating collective area sliding gates, for example gates to apartment blocks. It comes in 9 different versions, all designed to meet specific requirements.
3-phase technology enables the operator to work at full capacity, it features self-diagnosis of the safety circuits which blocks the system from working if it malfunctions and it also activates the auxiliary lighting of the driveway area which is directly controlled by the built-in electronic card.
Automated gates are an investment in the security of your home and if maintained well they can have a lengthy lifespan.
Caring for your gate system on a regular basis will have several benefits ensuring that all moving parts are well looked after, preventing failures mechanically and operationally, IMPROVING the LONGEVITY and EFFICIENCY of your system. Regular attention will also ensure that the safety of the system is where it should be to ensure compliancy with the Machinery Directive.
The amount of maintenance required will depend on many factors. For a residential dwelling, annual servicing is usually adequate. For shared entrances and commercial dwellings experiencing a higher volume of traffic, more frequent maintenance visits may be recommended.
During a service we carry out the following:
Ensure that the gates are kept lubricated to enable efficient operation.
Check and report on operation.
Identify any areas where equipment is worn or showing signs of failure.
Ensure that gates can be operated in manual mode.
Ensure that they operate in a safe manner and report on compliancy with current health and safety regulations.
Validate the three years parts warranty on Came equipment, when applicable.
When you book a service with us, you will receive a full service and safety report via email approximately 5 – 10 working days following the service.
To book a service with one of our experienced engineers, please call us on 01252 545241 or by emailing Servicing@surreywroughtiron.co.uk
The endurance of every installation will be different dependant on several factors.
One of our experienced skilled gate engineers will be able to advise accordingly following a thorough assessment to provide an efficient and effective repair, whilst providing the most economical solution.
We aim to carry out repairs by the next working day, where possible.
This visit is charged as a call out fee which includes half an hour on site to investigate and attend to the fault. If diagnostics or repairing exceeds 30 minutes, we will discuss additional costs for parts and/or labour, pending your approval.
On occasion, the recommendations may incur several upgrades, and or parts may need to be ordered in, in which case our office team will provide you with a full report on our findings along with a schedule for our return.
