FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Over the years we have built up a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of gate installation and automation.

Our customers frequently ask us many of the same questions, and this is what we tell them! If you still have a question, please get in touch and we'd be happy to assist you.

Are your gates made from wrought iron?

No, we proudly use mild steel, which has many endearing qualities, such as durability. It can be engineered easily, providing many options for creating the perfect product to suit your style.

Do you have a stock of gates and ironwork to choose from?

We do not hold stock. This is due to every entrance opening and design choice being different, we build bespoke to the area available so that it fits perfectly. The advantage of this, is that can choose a unique design or stick to one of our standard designs, depending on your style.

Will you be able to build a bespoke gate to the measurements I need?

Yes, everything we build is bespoke. We can offer a site visit to obtain measurements or if you would like us to provide a budgetary quotation, please do not hesitate to contact us, and we would be delighted to assist.

Can you build ironwork to other designs that are not your standard?

Yes, if you have a design or brief in mind, would like to mix and match one of our designs or would like to match an existing piece of ironwork, we can help you!

What is an order from and is it really that important?

It is a critical point of your order. It is hand created following a technical site survey. It reflects every aspect of your order, and all details must be checked and authorised (in writing) by you before we can proceed with your order. The ironwork is fabricated based on this document; therefore, it is essential that every detail is correct. Manufacturing lead times commence following the acceptance of this document.

What different types of wood do you offer?

Please see our different wood types here.

My ground is uneven, but I want automated gates, is it possible?

Of course! We use Shoes at the bottom of the gates. Once an order has been placed, our Gate technician will provide a detailed order form to address and overcome the uneven ground.

What is the difference between Track and cantilever equipment?

A tracked sliding gate runs on wheels along a grooved steel rail that is buried just below ground level.

A cantilever gate is counterbalanced above the ground, supported by rollers fitted to the bottom of the gate.

Do I need Manual sliding equipment (Track or cantilever) as well as automation?

If you would like an automated sliding gate, you will require the manual sliding equipment for the gate to be able to move sideways /slide, and the automation to allow it to open/close automatically. So yes you will require both.

What is the difference between RAMS and AXO and FROGS automation?

FROGS are underground motors. AXOS are above ground motors for smaller gates. RAMS are above ground motors for large and heavy swing gates. Please see full information on the different motor types here.

What are photocells?

Photocells use infrared technology to determine whether something is in the path of the gates as they are closing. One acts as a transmitter and the other a receiver. The “transmitter” sends a beam to the “receiver” and if that beam is broken, it is determined that there is an obstruction in the path of a closing gate and the gates will back off and re-open.

What is galvanising and powder coating?

Galvanising is a process which happens before powder coating. The process involves the ironwork being dipped in a tank of zinc to ensure complete coverage. This will prevent rust.

Powder coating can then be applied. This process involves the ironwork being chemically wrapped in a satin finish. Our standard colours are Black RAL9005, Green RAL6005, Brown RAL8017 and White RAL9016. Other colours are available, however may be at an additional charge. To view our colour chart, please visit http://www.e-paint.co.uk/RAL_Colourchart.asp

Do you need both galvanising and powder coating together?

We would recommend that both galvanising and powder coating are applied, together this will offer a robust long-lasting result. If galvanising only is required, the ironwork will be silver. If powder coating only is required, this may rust if the powder coating is interrupted in any way, and therefore we strongly discourage you to do this finish only.

What is a GSM entry system and how does it work?

The GSM entry system, is based on having good mobile phone signal and works by having 3 numbers coded into the sim card which is located by the gates. Usually, the first number is your home line, and then two mobile numbers. The sim card number can be saved by friends and family so that they can freely enter/exit the gates without bothering you. Up to 10 friends and family numbers can be added to the sim card so that the GSM recognises the numbers. For a visitor/delivery who does not have access, there is a call button. When the call button is pressed, the system will call the first number, if no answer the system moves onto the second number and so on. We can remotely access your GSM system from our office for maintenance and to add/change numbers.

Who provides the SIM card for the GSM entry system?

You will need to source your own SIM card. We would recommend a contract SIM card but you can do pay as you go however you will want to ensure there is always credit otherwise the gates will fail to operate.

What style post-boxes can you offer?

Several, we offer front access and rear access post-boxes. Please see details here.

How can a post box be installed?

Created with a wide range of fixing options, you could install them:

o Within a pier – You will require metal posts to be placed in-between or behind the brick piers as you will not be able to hang gates from pier if a post box is within one.

o Within a brick wall.

o Freestanding on a metal support column/pole.

o Within a gate or railing.

Do you offer other services other than gates and automation?

Yes, we pride ourselves on specializing in end-to-end projects. We are able to provide a quotation for driveway and building works, and many other areas. We will try to assist and manage the entire project if you wish.

I can’t visualize what my ironwork would look like, can you help?

Absolutely! We offer a visualiser service where you get one image free of charge. The image you receive is used to illustrate only; whilst we try to be as accurate on the finer details, such as colour, finials, hanging arrangements etc, they can appear different once made. This image is just for illustration purposes, it is not to scale and cannot be used for ordering your ironwork.

What is your lead time?

Lead times vary and depend on the project scope. Please contact us to discover our current lead times.

I have lost my transmitter; can I get a new one?

Yes! If your transmitter is CAME, we hold these in stock. We can programme them from our office and can send it out to you in the post ready to use. If your transmitter is not CAME we are well connected to different suppliers and will be able to order one in for you.

Can I use my transmitters/fobs from my old house on my new house?

Possibly. This would depend on the equipment installed at the new house and the brands of automation used at both the old house and new house and the brand of transmitter/fob. We can advise upon request.

My gates are not working, how do I put them into manual mode?

All CAME automation systems are self-locking, which makes them more secure. They all come with a manual release key that can be used to open gates in the event of a power cut. If you lose your release key, don’t worry! We keep plenty in stock and can get one out to you the next day.

Do I really need safety equipment? I already have photocells.

Should SWI be recommending additional safety equipment, this is absolutely required. Whilst photocells are arguably one of the most important safety aspects of an electric gate, they only determine if there is an obstruction in the path of a gate whilst it is closing. Photocells do not protect against other risks, such as crush hazards.

What guarantees do I get with gates installed by you?

Materials used for the work are guaranteed for one year from the date of installing them. Within this period, if the materials are defective then we will repair or replace the defective materials free of charge.

CAME (our automation supplier) offer an extended further 2 years warranty, on parts only, provided you keep up with regular servicing for the first 2 years after install. The date of your first service will be due 1 year following the date of commissioning.

I can’t book in a service for exactly 1 year following installation, will my extended warranty be affected?

Materials used for the work are guaranteed for one year from the date of installing them. Within this period, if the materials are defective then we will repair or replace the defective materials free of charge.

CAME (our automation supplier) offer an extended further 2 years warranty, on parts only, provided you keep up with regular servicing for the first 2 years after install. The date of your first service will be due 1 year following the date of commissioning.

How often should my automated gates be serviced?

We highly recommend that a service for automated gates is carried out at least once a year. It improves longevity of the equipment, ensures the system complies with current health and safety and even validates additional warranty on newly installed CAME automation equipment, where applicable. For further information on servicing, please visit this page.

Do you automatically book in a service for me?

No, as we want the service to be at a convenient time for you. We aim to contact all our service customers a few weeks before it is due to arrange a visit. Whilst we make every effort to contact everyone when their service is due, sometimes you may need to contact us to schedule a booking.

I have been told that I have a slugged board, what does that mean?

Whilst this is becoming rarer and rarer with the high-quality products we use, a slugged board is the unfortunate event that despite equipment protection, some insects get into the gate controls and damage is a caused. This is due to how small they are and can get into even the smallest of places. Regrettably, it is something that is not covered by the suppliers guarantee/warranty and a new control board would need to be purchased by you.

What advantages does having automated gates bring?

First and foremost, they provide security, prevent unwanted visitors such as cold callers. They block trespassers and provide privacy. On top of all of that they provide convenience and add atheistic value to your property.

Can a third party, such as an electrician or builder fix my gates?

We would never recommend anyone, except a trained gate engineer, repairs or amends your gate system, no matter how minor the works may seem to you. You need to ensure that the gates always remain safe and even something as small as just a fuse requiring to be changed may need thorough investigation into the cause. It will result in any warranty/guarantees being null and void, where applicable.

I’ve seen replacement parts online, cheaper, can I buy them, and you install them?

We wouldn’t recommend you buy parts on the internet, even if they look identical to what you require. They could be fakes; they could be missing essential elements which have been modified as products are developed over time. You could also lose out on guarantees and warranties. If the part is defective, will you get a refund? Will it be lost in transit, and you never receive it? Is it actually compatible with what you already have? If the part develops a fault, you will be responsible for sourcing another replacement. When you purchase parts through us, we take of everything for you.

I already have gates; can they be automated?

Most gates can be automated however adaptations may need to be made to the gates and hanging arrangements to make them suitable for automation and to ensure they are safe.

Can I upgrade my current automation?

Yes, your system would need a thorough survey performed by a skilled engineer to ascertain the equipment that best suits your requirements. Please contact us to discuss costing and availability for a Site Survey appointment.
